A morning's worth of frames along a quiet stretch of shoreline, waiting for the weather to resolve.

Notes

A short dawn outing on an overcast morning. The light opened and closed in small windows, which is usually when the camera does the most useful work.

Conditions

  • Overcast, very low contrast
  • Light wind, dropping as the hour went on
  • Tide falling throughout

Approach

Everything shot from one position for the first hour, then moved a short distance down the shore. The goal was less composition and more patience.

Captured on

  • Medium-format rangefinder, 80mm lens
  • Kodak Portra 400
  • Three-stop ND filter
  • Tripod, cable release
First frame of the morning, before the light settled.
A few minutes later, same tripod position, different weather.

Outcome

After the cloud

Trips like this are mostly standing still and watching. The work is in the waiting more than the pressing.
