Three winter frames from the foot of a range that refused to show itself cleanly.

Notes

A winter morning at the edge of open country, where the peaks kept dipping in and out of cloud for the better part of four hours.

Morning

  • Arrived before first light, cold but no wind
  • Cloud ceiling dropping steadily for the first hour
  • Small windows of clear sky every few minutes

Approach

Everything from a single pull-off, tripod planted once and left alone. The frames came and went with the cloud.

Captured on

  • Medium-format rangefinder, 80mm lens
  • Ilford HP5 Plus, pushed one stop
  • Developed in HC-110
  • Scanned at 2400 dpi
Second stop of the morning. The cloud cycled through the ridge every few minutes.
Turned around to shoot back the way I had driven in.

Outcome

On waiting

Five usable frames out of three rolls, which is a better ratio than it sounds. The rest of the time is standing in the wind thinking about gloves.
