A small farmstead photographed across a single afternoon of late-winter light.

Notes

A small working farm at the edge of a thawing river, photographed twice across a single afternoon. The weather was doing everything it could to make the rest of the trip difficult.

Setting

  • Sheltered bend in the river
  • Single farm road running past, no fence line in the frame
  • Low sun from the west for roughly forty-five minutes

Approach

Both frames hand-held. The aim was to keep the farm small in the frame and let the valley do the work.

Captured on

  • Rangefinder body, 50mm lens
  • Ilford Delta 100, rated at 80
  • Developed in Ilfotec DDX
  • Scanned at 2400 dpi
Same farm, shot from the road shoulder a few hundred metres south.
Late afternoon, one frame before the light pulled out.

Outcome

Only the roof moved

The house sits where it has always sat. A steady subject for a steady kind of picture.
